Fleeing the Spanish Inquisition, Judah Benjamin's parents, Philip Benjamin and Rebecca de Mendes Benjamin, were Jews who immigrated from Spain to the West Indies (now called the Virgin Islands). When they heard that Jews were tolerated and allowed to prosper in the United States, the family moved to the United States in 1813.
